Charlotte Ballet’s Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte fundraising gala welcomed guests to the Knight Theater on March 5 and raised a record-setting $775,000, with approximately $200,000 going to six local charities. The event, in its fourth year, pairs local stars from some of Charlotte’s most esteemed corporations with the professional dancers of Charlotte Ballet, to raise funds for the ballet company and each star’s chosen charity.

Former Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte participants Cathy Bessant, chief operations and technology officer at Bank of America, and Dianne Chipps Bailey, who leads the Nonprofit Organizations and Foundations Practice Group at Robinson Bradshaw, were the event co-chairs. Last year Bessant set the fundraising record for the event, while Chipps Bailey won the Judge’s Choice Award.

The Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte competition was performed for a lively sold out crowd of over 900 and judges Dr. Derek Raghavan, Ruth Shaw and Fred Whitfield. The People’s Choice Award, given to the star performer with the highest donations, went to Grant Thornton CEO Mike McGuire, dancing to benefit Bright Blessings. Receiving a perfect score of 30 from the judges, former Carolina Panther Mike Rucker, dancing to benefit United Service Organizations of North Carolina, won the Judges’ Choice award.
