Innovative Works is Charlotte Ballet’s sell-out winter series that pushes creative boundaries and challenges choreographers and dancers alike.
This year, Artistic Director Hope Muir has collaborated with an icon of Charlotte’s cultural landscape, The Mint Museum. Muir has commissioned three unique choreographic voices to create new works for the company inspired by The Mint’s stellar exhibition “Immersed in Light: Studio Drift at the Mint.” These choreographers have been generously granted access to Studio Drift artists and time in the exhibit from which to draw inspiration.
Featured Choreographers:
Duane Cyrus: A performing and creative artist whose work is rooted in Black American and Caribbean culture, Cyrus is Director of the performing and visual art collective Theatre of Movement and a professor at UNC Greensboro. He danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, among others.
Christopher Stuart: Resident Choreographer of The Nashville Ballet, Stuart’s deep experience as a dancer and performer at Nashville Ballet has helped him articulate his unique choreographic voice through improvising and exploring different forms of movement. His many recognitions include 2016 New York Choreographic Institute Fellowship and the 2010 Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship.
Chelsea Dumas: Charlotte Ballet dancer and Choreographic Lab participant Dumas sees her first commission for the company after the success of her work Sonnet 116 in last summer’s Lab. Under the guidance and mentorship of Artistic Director Muir, Dumas’ development as a choreographer has been extended to this collaboration with Studio Drift and The Mint Museum.
Innovative Works takes place at the Center for Dance on North Tryon, in Charlotte Ballet’s intimate 200-seat black box theater. Every seat is great. Each performance features a meet-and-greet with company dancers upon conclusion. Free parking is available across Tryon St. This unique series will sell out – don’t miss it!
NOTE: The Mint Museum exhibition is running through April 26. We recommend that you experience for yourself the light that inspires our movement!
