David Secrest

Managing Director, Barings

David Secrest is a native of the Charlotte area, was born in Shelby, and considers himself a local Charlottean. As the youngest child with two older brothers, David was active in a number of sports throughout his youth. He ultimately concentrated on football and was named as a placekicker and punter to the 1993 Shrine Bowl, an annual game that pits the best public school football players in North Carolina against their peers in South Carolina. He later played football at University of North Carolina, where he earned a business degree at the Kenan Flagler School of Business. Following his graduation from Chapel Hill in 1998, David returned to Charlotte, where he lives on Circle Avenue with Natalie, his wife of 11 years.

David began work as an analyst at First Union in 1998 before joining a small, specialized collateralized loan obligation team within Wachovia Asset Management. His Institutional Debt Management group was later acquired by Babson Capital Management, which rebranded as Barings in 2016. David remained committed to his team throughout his career and is now a Managing Director responsible for Primary Trading for the U.S. High Yield team at Barings.

David and Natalie enjoy cooking and refining their tastes in wine. He continues to maintain an active lifestyle and balances his culinary passions as an avid cyclist, golfer and outdoor enthusiast. He is equally committed to his community and has served on the Board of Ambassadors at Levine Children’s Hospital since 2012. He also serves as a direct liaison to the Charlotte community on behalf of Barings’ philanthropic efforts and outreach.

A few fun facts about David:

David loves growing tomatoes and hot peppers in his garden.

When he’s not in Charlotte, he’s usually in Linville, N.C., walking the golf course at Grandfather Golf and Country Club.
