Minus 16 is a piece where a dancer can truly explore their identity. It breaks down the barrier of how dancers are perceived, and it lets the audience see how we feel on stage. The piece to me is about human expression; whether it’s extreme and violent or soft and quiet. It shows how silly we can be and how serious we can be. Having performed the piece three years ago and again last year, the anxiety and joy I feel simultaneously is nothing but amazing. Now, I see more of its meaning and can really put truth behind my performance. It’s not your typical ballet or contemporary piece. It’s very fun, but the intent behind the work is genuine. Charlotte will love this piece.”

“I was first inspired by the choreography of Minus 16when I saw it performed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I was intrigued by its physicalityand how it continued to build throughout the piece. The choreography is phenomenal. The repetition of the steps and canon in the beginning semi-circle is exciting to watch because the dancers have to be in sync with one another as they thrust themselves until the last dancer collapses to the ground. I’m in love with the costumes because of their minimalism. I’ve always wanted to wear a suit on stage, or just a tank top and shorts, and now I will have the chance to fulfill this desire.”

“I was so excited to perform Minus 16 for Fall Works last season because it was completely different than any piece I’ve performed before. It was exciting to branch out and add a new choreographer to the list of repertoire that I have already performed. The choreography is so unique and allows the dancers to move in such organic ways. I heard that I would be moving my body in a way that I probably hadn’t before, so I’m looking forward to trying it again!”
