Charlotte Ballet Artistic Director Hope Muir is bringing back four acclaimed choreographers for the 2018/2019 Season: welcoming back first Sasha Janes, with a new world premiere, as well as Johan Inger, Helen Pickett and Peter Chu. Sasha Janes

Sasha Janes was born in Perth, Australia, and has danced professionally with the West Australian Ballet, Australian Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Dayton Ballet and Charlotte Ballet. At Charlotte Ballet, he was named Associate Artistic Directer in 2012 and added the title of Resident Choreographer in 2013. After his choreographic debut in 2006, Sasha has choreographed many ballets for Charlotte Ballet, including Rhapsodic Dances, performed as part of the Kennedy Center’s Ballet Across America series in June 2013. He has participated in the New York Choreographic Institute and has created a work for Richmond Ballet’s New Works Festival. The Washington Post called Sasha, ‘a choreographer to watch.’

Sasha’s pieces for Charlotte Ballet have been highly commended in the past, which is why he is honoring Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein for Fall Works this season. It is the centennial celebration of these two landmark artists and Sasha is going to pay tribute to them through a piece set to Bernstein’s music.

Johan Inger

Johan Inger’s works can be found in the repertoires of leading companies all over the world. Johan is a former Netherlands Dance Theater dancer, and he completed his dance training at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and the National Ballet School in Canada. He was the artistic director of the Cullberg Ballet from 2003 to 2008.

Johan’s Walking Mad, performed at last year’s Fall Works, had resounding success and a powerful audience response. This year, we are bringing back the stylistic game-changer for Spring Works to give audiences another opportunity to experience this award-winning piece.

Helen Pickett

Helen Pickett is an American choreographer who has performed with William Forsythe’s Ballet Frankfurt and Wooster Group theater company. She serves as choreographer in residence at Atlanta Ballet. In the past 12 years, she has set over 35 works on companies across the US and Europe.

Audiences enjoyed Charlotte Ballet’s performance of her mesmerizing pas de deus Tsukiyo, set to Spiegel im Spiegel, by Arvo Part. Admired choreographer Helen Pickett is returning to Charlotte to create a new commission that is sure to capture the beauty and power of our artists. Peter Chu

Born in the Bronx, NY, and raised in Cocoa Beach, FL, Peter began his training as a competitive gymnast. Upon graduation from The Juilliard School, he performed with BJM Danse, EZdanza, Aszure Barton & Artists, Kidd Pivot and in Celine Dion’s Vegas spectacular, A New Day. In 2008, Peter formed a Las Vegas project base dance company, chuthis., which showcases the work of Peter and his collaborators. Peter is known for his work with Orlando Ballet, METDance, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and FOX television’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” among others.

Last year, Peter worked with students from Charlotte Ballet’s award-winning scholarship dance program Reach as well as Charlotte Ballet’s Second Company to create Rite of Spring. Audiences can look forward to seeing more of Peter’s choreography in the daring experiment that is Innovative Works.
