ABOUT THE ACADEMY
Charlotte Ballet Academy, the first school of ballet in the state to be affiliated with a nationally renowned professional ballet company, provides a nurturing and structured environment that encourages individuality, creative expression and an appreciation for the art of dance. The Academy provides expert instruction to students who are training for a professional career in dance, as well as those who are interested in simply experiencing the joy and benefits of dance training. Charlotte Ballet Academy offers programs for students in a range of ages and with different levels of ability. School year programs include the highest quality of instruction in ballet, musical theatre and jazz technique.
Alumni of Charlotte Ballet Academy’s Training Program are currently members of New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Charlotte Ballet, Czech National Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, Cincinnati Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, Texas Ballet Theatre, Atlanta Ballet and Louisville Ballet. Additional alumni have gone on to study at numerous distinguished colleges around the country including Harvard University, Indiana University, Butler University and Duke University.
ACADEMY HISTORY
1993
Dance Place, the official school of North Carolina Dance Theatre, was founded under the direction of Artistic Director Salvatore Aiello and Executive Director Myrna Saturn Gatty.
1996
Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride arrive at North Carolina Dance Theatre as Artistic Director and Associate Director. Ms. McBride becomes a member of the school’s faculty.
Addition of a DancePlace location in South Charlotte, on the campus of Charlotte Country Day School.
2000
DancePlace introduced its first Summer Intensive Program.
2001
School of Dance instates a partnership with University of North Carolina Charlotte for a joint Certificate Program.
2005
DancePlace changed its name to North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance.
2014
North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance becomes Charlotte Ballet Academy, in a reflection of the organization’s growing.
2015
Charlotte Ballet Academy completes installment of its own written curriculum for the entire ballet training program.
